PNG → WebP: A Practical Upgrade
2025-02-14
PNG is excellent for UI, logos, and any asset needing lossless edges. However, many PNGs ship with unnecessary weight. WebP offers better compression and can be either lossy or lossless. For screenshots and UI mockups, try lossless WebP; for photos, use lossy WebP at a quality that preserves key details.
Before converting, check transparency requirements and destination support. If transparency isn’t required, converting to JPEG can sometimes be smaller than WebP. Compare outputs side‑by‑side and watch for haloing around type or icons. The goal isn’t maximum compression; it’s excellent perceived quality at the lightest weight.
